A note or two on the vagaries of our catalogues. We still spell “catalogue”
c-a-t-a-l-o-g-u-e. I grew up with that spelling just as I grew up with the short “a” in “tomato”. And we spell “color” without the medial “u”. This particular catalogue has material in it that has been on our shelves for a while, some of it for many years. While the NUC counts remain accurate, OCLC counts (and counts from other on-line databases) may not be. We’ve spot-checked records in this catalogue only to find, for example, that a book processed three years ago which showed only two holdings then, may now show five. These counts remain fluid and may not necessarily be precise. While we have the desire, we just do not have the time to continually monitor books that have already been processed. We’ve also checked, with a good deal more regularity, but not exclusively, the prices of our books with similar books listed on line. It’s no secret that for the more common books (in the case of this catalogue most of them 20th century) it is a race to the bottom, and of the 150 or so books here whose prices have been changed, I’d guess over 75% of them were lowered more than 50%. While we try to be accurate with our description of a book’s condition, we are not overly verbose about dust jacket minutia, previous owners’ inscriptions, bookplates, or evidence of previous readers (which generally I count as a plus), unless they are of some consequence this way or that. This catalogue is old school. If you are looking for a catalogue of trophy books, or books whose condition is “collectable” (a swap-meet word if there ever was one), unusually fine, or so fine as to be untouchable, then fine: discard the catalogue now and read no further. This is not a catalogue of books on pedestals; it is a catalogue of books meant to be held, read, and studied—books that deserve to be owned. Dedication: On a recent Tuesday, as is our wont, we posted our catalogue to the Exlibris list and received an email back from a bookseller (a bookseller!) who wrote, “Very nice material but you really need a lot more photos.” Are we selling photographs, or books? This catalogue is dedicated to him, and to all those who don’t read catalogues anymore and would rather look at the pretty pictures. / Rob Rulon-Miller
