First edition, small 8vo, pp. xix, [1], 215; full maroon morocco with raised bands on spine and title in gilt, t.e.g.; joints rubbed, else very good The author's own copy, with his initials on spine, bookplate on upper pastedown, and signature on upper free endpaper. Sixteen leaves bound in at the back are filled with clippings from reviews, with their source and date added in ink by Bell. An effusive letter of praise is also laid in. Bell (1869-1931) wrote on a number of subjects, and even tried his hand at verse: Songs of the Shawangunks (1891); Aala Deene and Other Poems (1899): The Religion of Beauty and the Impersonal Estate (1911); The Philosophy of Painting; A Study of the Development of the Art from Prehistoric to Modern Times (1916); and, Woman from Bondage to Freedom (1921), as well as four books on language: The Worth of Words (1903); Words of the Wood (1906); The Changing Values of English Speech (1909); and, The Mystery of Words (1924).
