First edition, small 4to, pp. [34], 824, [80]; title page printed in red and black, printer's woodcut device, woodcut initials; full contemporary calf; double gilt rules on covers, gilt decorated spine in 6 compartments, gilt-lettered direct in 1, sprinkled edges; joints cracked, extremities rubbed and worn, the spine sunned; the binding remains sound. Gerhard Vossius (1577-1649) was a life-long friend of Hugo Grotius, and at the University of Leiden devoted himself to philology and historical theology; later in life he was professor of Greek and Rhetoric.
