The history of the rise, increase, and progress of the Christian people called Quakers; with several remarkable occurances, intermixed... Third edition, corrected.

Burlington, N.J. Isaac Collins, 1774. Folio, pp. xii, 812, [16]; full contemporary calf, joints starting; red morocco label on spine; good copy, unrestored. Sewel is best remembered today as a historian of the Quakers. His History of the Rise, Increase and Progress of the Christian People Called the Quakers, first published in 1722, is a remarkable product by a writer who at the time had only spent ten years in England. His philological talents, however, were many. His Dutch-English dictionary, first published in 1691, and his Compendious Guide to the Low Dutch Language (1700) were both still in print in the nineteenth century; he also edited Philippe La Grue's Dutch grammar, and translated the likes of Robert Boyle, William Penn, Bishop Burnet, Basil Kennett and Matthew Prior into Dutch. Evans 13607. Item #11877
