Two editions were published in 1843, one in Providence and the other in New York. "Internal differences led Graff to believe that the New York edition was the earlier one … "Lang and Taylor were members of the Society of Friends who visited the Indians recently removed from east of the Mississippi to the trans-Mississippi regions. Their report was presented to the Yearly Meeting of the Friends of New England and New York before being published under the above title … They visited the Winnebagoes, Shawnees, Kickapoos, Delawares, Kansas, Osages, Cherokees, and Choctaws, between August and December, 1842" (Wagner-Camp).
