Under the auspices of the U.S. Navy, Kane set out in search of Franklin, who had not been heard from since 1847, to explore, and to make scientific investigations in the regions north of Smith Sound. While Kane came away empty-handed as far as information on Franklin was concerned, the expedition was of extreme importance for its scientific and geographical discoveries.
