First edition, 2 volumes, folio, pp. [16], 836; woodcut initials and ornaments; on the verso of the title page in vol. II within red rules is written "The original manuscript of both volumes of this History will be deposited in the Cotton Library by T. Burnett." Both volumes in contemporary bindings but they are not uniform; vol. I in paneled calf, gilt-decorated spine, red morocco label; vol. II in full calf, red and green morocco labels, gilt fillets on spine; both scuffed, rubbed, and worn, joints cracked or starting; good and sound. Volume I: From the restoration of King Charles II. to the settlement of King William and Queen Mary at the revolution: to which is prefix'd A summary recapitulation of affairs in church and state from King James I. to the restoration. Volume II: From the revolution to the conclusion of the Treaty of Peace at Utrecht, in the reign of Queen Anne. To which is added, the author's life, by the editor. Contains "A list of Bishop Burnet's works" at the back of vol. II. Long and influential subscriber lists in both volumes. "In the second volume Burnet [the editor] ... promised to deposit the manuscript of both volumes ... in the Cotton library, but failed to fulfill his promise" (DNB). Item #33819
