Item #40812 Autograph "Epigram," signed. Ebenezer Elliott.

Autograph "Epigram," signed

Barnsley [South Yorkshire, England]: 13th September, 1845. Large 8vo bifolium, ink stains along bottom edge, toning, faint creases from previous folds; very good. Holograph address in Elliott's hand to GSO Reid, Esq. of Glasgow, postmarked, and wax sealed on p. [4]. A 10-line "Corn Law" poem titled "Epigram," which begins "Seers have foretold strange matters, and, alas/ Strange matters, unforetold, will come to pass!/ Sometimes, cracked pisspots have the honour done them/ In gardens to be used as fuschia vases/ Though the indignant bee cries 'fie upon them.'" This would later be published in the posthumous "More Verse and Prose from the Cornlaw Rhymer" (1850). Much of Elliott's literary work was devoted to repealing the Corn Laws, to which he attributed an earlier bankruptcy. Item #40812
