First edition, 8vo, pp. xiii, [1], 306; lithograph frontispiece of the Falls of St. Anthony, 6 wood-engraved plates, illustrations in text, lacking folding map; contemporary three quarter tan calf over marbled boards, black and maroon gilt-lettered morocco spine labels, spine in 6 elaborately gilt tooled compartments, all edges yellow; edges a bit rubbed and worn; first few leaves, including frontispiece, foxed, pp. 13-18 detached but present, else interior very good. Includes sections on Canada and Lake Superior, northern Michigan and Wisconsin; about half the text is devoted to Minnesota. In his introduction Oliphant states: "I have endeavored to give some account of the present condition and prospects of the country, and to covey some idea of those resources whose rapid development will be before long a material influence upon the wealth and importance of the United States."
