New York: 1890. Large folio (15½"), being vol. XLII, complete, 1858 pages, from January 2 to December 25, 1890; numerous illustrated advertisements; a few marginal tears, in a new library binding of full black cloth lettered in gilt on the upper cover, old library rubberstamp on page edges, a few insignificant tears in the corners (occasionally with losses), but in all very good and sound. The Independent was a New York weekly newspaper founded in 1848 by Henry Chandler Bowen. This Congregationalist paper, which was published until 1921, included social topics, primarily opposition to slavery and religious articles, but after the Civil War included literary submissions. Editors included, among others, Henry Ward Beecher, Theodore Tilton, Kinsley Twining, Hamilton Holt, William Hayes Ward, and his sister, Susan Hayes Ward. Item #42029
