Third edition, corrected, thick 4to, pp. xix, [1], 1633; text in double columns; contemporary calf ruled in gilt, elaborately gilt-tooled spine in 6 compartments, black gilt-lettered calf spine label, all edges red, marbled endpapers; extremities and boards scuffed, upper cover neatly reattached; relevant contemporary newspaper clipping (source unknown) mounted to ffep, interior fine. Still the standard Greek-English lexicon. With the ownership signature on the flyleaf of Alex[ander] McD[onald] Allan, "Canada’s most well-known pomologist (apple grower) and horticulturalist at the turn of the 20th century. His passion for fruit made him one of the Dominion’s most well-known boosters overseas. The Pall Mall Gazette of London, England titled him ‘The Fruit King of Canada.’ From his Cameron Street residence, Allan reigned over his burgeoning fruit growing empire for over 30 years." The ownership inscription is dated Sept. 2nd, 1865, when Allan was 21 years old and still a student at the University of Toronto. His father was one of the most accomplished classical scholars in Ontario. He tutored young Alexander in the classics and sent him to the Stratford Grammar School. Item #42778
