Francisco Javier Vingut (1823-1857), a Cuban, came to the United States in 1848 and taught modern languages at New York University, 1848-1857. Editor of several Spanish-language newspapers and the author of book for the study of Spanish, French, and English, he also published an anthology, Gems of Spanish Poetry (New York, 1855).
