Lord Brougham's character of Mr. Pitt

First edition, 8vo, pp. vii, [1], 317, [1]; near-contemporary full dark blue gilt-tooled calf, red gilt morocco spine label, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers; edges a bit scuffed; 20th-century bookplates on front pastedown and free endpaper, one of which accomplished in manuscript in ballpoint pen by a recent owner; "Bath Books" written in pen on title page. Nevertheless, a very good, attractive copy. The author's response to Lord Henry Brougham's rather caustic essay on William Pitt (1759-1806), Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1783 to 1801. Brougham's essay originally appeared in book form as a chapter in the first series, second volume of his "Historical Sketches of Statesmen" (1839).
