Prospectus of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register

Boston: 1846. 4to, bifolium, prospectus and subscription form printed on facing integral leaves, the blank congugate leaf with the hand-written address to Wm. A. Hayes, South Berwick, Me., and postmarked Boston, Jan. 18. Previous folds, else fine. Incorporated in March of 1845, the NEHGS is the oldest and largest genealogical organization in the United States. Published continuously since 1847, the Register is the "flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field (NEHGS website). The text opens with two paragraphs explaining the rational for tyhe new publication, followed by a list of topics to be included. Signed in type, "Sam'l G. Drake and dated Boston, Dec. 22, 1846." A different version of the prospectus with some alterations to the text and without the subscription block (here blank) was printed at the end of the first volume of the Register. William A. Hayes (1783-1858), the recipient of this prospectus, was a prominent York County, Maine jurist. Peabody Essex Museum only in OCLC. Item #46014
