Printing and the Mind of Man 224, citing the first edition of 1777: "From the casual experience of visiting the Bedford Gaol - one of the most influential prisions in English history - came Howard's determination to improve prison conditions. His single-handed campaign notonly caused a revolution in his lifetime, but is the drect progenitor of subsequent work in the most critical branch of penal reform." Item #47941
