Two-page autograph letter (on card) signed, addressed to “Mr. Baring”, i.e. Maurice Baring (1874-1945), poet and author
Albert Gate Mansions, 219, Knightsbridge, S.W., London: April 20, 1907. Written on two sides of a small card approx. 3½" x 4½"; tape residue along the left margin recto (not touching any letters), otherwise fine. In full: "Dear Mr. Baring, I am delighted to go to you at St Cross on Saturday June the 29th till Monday. It is so good of you to ask me. Victoria is just off to Venice to draw. And my other sister Diana brings out her first little play early next month. I am so jealous of them both that my doctor has forbidden me to do any work for a whole year, possibly two. Yours very - Mary Cholmondeley." Mary Cholmondeley refers in the letter to her sister Diana’s “first little play,” likely A Man’s Foes, a one-act drama by Diana Cholmondeley cited as “[a]mongst some of the best” of the year in The Stage Year Book (London: Carson and Comerford, 1908), p. 22. Her sister Victoria exhibited watercolours and drawings, and lived with Mary for some years. Item #48438
