With a 1734 manuscript monastery ex-libris at the bottom of the title page. Pollux, the Greek grammarian and Sophist from Naucratis in Egypt, flourished in the second century A.D. The Onomasticon, the only work of his which survives, "is a Greek dictionary in ten books...arranged not alphabetically, but according to subject matter. Though mainly a dictionary of synonyms and phrases, chiefly intended to furnish the reader with the Attic names for individual things, it supplies much rare and valuable information on many points of classical antiquity [and] numerous fragments of writers now lost" (EB-11).
