Encyclopaedic dictionary: a new and original work of reference to all the words in the English language

London: Cassell & Co., 1887-1890. Large 8vo, 7 volumes, text in triple column, illustrations in the text; head of spine of vol. I slightly cracked, else a handsome copy in half red morocco over red cloth boards, gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, gilt-lettered direct in 2; slightly scuffed, but near fine. From the Preface: "The idea of the Encyclopaedic Dictionary originated with Messrs. Cassell, Petter & Galpin (now Cassell & Co., Ltd.), and in March 1872 proposals were made by the firm to the Rev. R. (now Dr.) Hunter that he should undertake the work." The work appeared in seven volumes between 1879-88. "Because it was issued by various publishers it has been referred to by several names (Cassell's, Lloyd's etc.)...
