An incomplete but substantial run of the special Christmas numbers of The Bookman, 1905-34, 22 numbers in all (lacking those for 1908, 1910, 1921-27, and 1930; all in original pictorial wrappers or original limp buckram, all with numerous inserts and illustrations by many of the famous illustrators of the day, many mounted, many in color, and most, but not all, with the extra inserted portfolios, viz: 1905 with the extra portfolio laid in containing reproductions of paintings of Janes Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and George Eliot; 1906 lacking the portfolio of Rackham (as often), and with the frontispiece portrait of George Meredith torn and repaired on verso; 1907 lacking the portfolio of Edmund Dulac; 1909 lacking the portfolio of W. Heath Robinson; 1911 lacking the portfolio by Hugh Thomson; 1912 with the extra portfolio containing 4 color plates by Edmund Dulac, illustrating scenes from Poe's Poems; 1913 with 2 extra portfolios containing 3 plates by Hugh Thomson and 2 by Kay Nielsen; 1914 with the extra portfolio containing with plates by Dulac, Kay Nielsen, and Hugh Thompson, one mounted illustration in the text by Appleton is wanting; 1915 with the extra portfolio containing 3 plates by Bernard Partridge; 1916 with the extra portfolio containing 3 plates by Dulac; 1917 with the extra portfolio containing 3 plates by Eleanor Fortesque Brickdale illustrating Old English Songs and Ballads; 1918 with the extra portfolio containing 3 plates by Dulac illustrating Hawthorne's Tanglewood Tales; 1919 with the extra portfolio containing 1(of ?) plates by Eleanor Fortesque Brickdale illustrating the Golden Book of Famous Women; 1920 with the extra portfolio containing 3 plates by Jessie Wilcox Smith illustrating Kingsley The Water Babies; 1927 with the extra portfolio containing 6 portraits in color by Spy, Junr.; 1928 with the extra portfolio containing a portrait of Galsworthy with scenes illustrating The Forsyte Saga by A. C. Michael; 1929 with the extra portfolio containing 3 plates by Dulac illustrating Poe's Poems; 1931 with the extra portfolio containing 6 plates by John Morton Sale illustrating Bennett's The Old Wive's Tales; 1932 with the extra portfolio containing 4 plates by Jospeh Simpson illustrating Priestley's Angel Pavement; spine tape-repaired; 1933 with the extra portfolio containing 5 plates by J. Morton-Sale; 1934 with the extra portfolio containing 6 plates by Frank Brangwyn. Among the contributors are Alice Meynell, Richard Curle, Holbrook Jackson, W. H. Hudson, Frank A. Mumby, John Freeman, Lewis Melville, George Saintsbury, Augustine Birrell, Alfred Noyes, Richard Le Gallienne, C. P. Snow, Hugh Walpole, James Hilton, T. F. Powys, A. J. Cronin, and many others. The overall condition is good to very good; all issues appear to be complete except as noted, but we have not collated them. Contained in 6 new gray linen clamshell boxes, leather labels on spine.
