Two-page manuscript poem "The Muskrats Inquiry - a Parody"

written for William Knight of Akron, N York, Feb. 28, 1863. Folio, approx. 12" x 7½", on recto and verso of a single sheet, 4 stanzas of 10 lines each; a personified muskrat laments the cold of winter, traps, dogs, and the perpetual want by humans of its fur. Atkins [also Adkins] was likely the Union soldier from West Virginia, serving as a private in the 7th Regiment of the West Virginia Calvary. At the bottom on the letter is a small thumb-nail size albumen photograph of (presumably) Atkins. Item #52695
