First edition, 4to, pp. [8], [5]-134; contemporary paneled calf, gilt floriate borders on covers enclosing a central gilt panel; neatly rebacked with gilt lettering on spine; extremities worn but the binding sound. A good, and unusual copy with seven lines crossed out on p. 6 and with seven new lines penned in the top margin; also, on pp. 34-35 six lines are crossed out and six new lines penned in at the bottom margin; similarly, on pp. 122-23 four lines are crossed out and ten new lines are penned in the top and bottom margin; approximately 2 dozen words and phrases have been crossed out and replaced with new words and phrases, and in yet another 8 instances, the annotator has noted in the margin "See additional notes in last edition." A previous bookseller speculates in pencil on the flyleaf that these are authorial corrections. Always dubious of such proclamations, after having searched for examples of Campbell's handwriting and thanks to communication these days I have at hand a half dozen examples) I can't say I'm 100% sure these are authorial, but I'm safely confident and I am selling this book "with the poet's revisions." The 8 instances of "see additional notes in last edition" reinforces the supposition, sounding like Campbell is referring a reader to his notes in an edition subsequent to this. And as anyone familiar with the poem knows, Gertrude was revised in the later editions. Item #53189
