Cincinnati: Phonographic Institute, [1860]. 12mo, pp. 104, [31], 130-136, 7, [1]; printed partly by relief copper plate; original black cloth blind- and gilt-stamped, marbled edges; corners bumped, gilt worn, about fine. A much expanded and rearranged edition of the American Pitman manual. Benn moved to Cincinnati soon after arriving in the US in 1853 and worked diligently to spread his brother Isaac's system of shorthand through the states. His manuals on Pitman shorthand became the most important and most often reprinted text on the subject in the US. Item #53884
