The Yankee enterprise, or the two millionaires; and other thrilling tales

Boston: Dayton and Wentworth, 1855. 8vo, pp. [i]-6, [25]-334 (complete); frontispiece engraved by George B. Ellis after a painting by H. W. Buss, text illustrations; original brown cloth stamped in blind and black; light soiling and rubbing to boards, title leaf tipped in; title page and frontispiece foxed with some lighter foxing in preliminaries, bulk of textblock clean and sound. A collection of short stories and vignettes on travel and faraway places, including Africa, India, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. According to the preface, the sections were chosen to highlight the "indomitable energy of the New Englander in every section of the globe, and to illustrate a verification of the saying that 'place a Yankee on an uninhabited island, with but a bunch of shingles and a jackknife, and he would construct a vessel to convey him home'" The majority of the chapters are contributed anonymously. Inspite of the emphatic Americaness of title and preface, the only authors cited are British. Wright II, 2828, citing two imprints for 1855 (Wentworth & Co / Dayton and Wentworth). Item #54591
