Prize essays on roads and road making

Boston: Wright & Potter, state printers, 1870. 8vo, pp. 118; tables and illustrations in the text; short tear in fore-margin of front wrap and first few leaves, small hole in back wrapper and last 2 leaves; all else very good in original printed tan wrappers. Early ownership signature at the top of the front wrapper of E. B. Bigelow, likely Erastus Brigham Bigelow (1814-1879), inventor of weaving machines. Contains the full texts of the first three winners: "The Science of Road Making," by Clemens Herschell; "Construction and Repair of Roads," by Samuel F. Miller; and, "Maintenance and Repairs of Common Roads," by Henry Onion. The contest was supported by the State Legislature of Massachusetts who appropriated $400 in prize money.
