Jewett was a bibliographer and historian at Brown University from where he graduated in 1835, and who subsequently became professor of modern languages and literature. In 1848 he became assistant librarian at the Smithsonian but was removed in 1853 over a disagreement on policy. He finished his career at Boston Public.
