Item #55308 One-page autograph letter signed to John Bailey, Esq. Department of State. Samuel Eddy.

One-page autograph letter signed to John Bailey, Esq. Department of State

N.p. February 27, 1821. Quarto, wax seal and address on verso of integral leaf; break at the seal, previous folds, slightly toned; very good. Samuel Eddy (1769-1839) was a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island, Secretary of State, and later Chief Justice of the R.I. Supreme Court. Here, he writes to John Bailey in the matter of "Mr. Lyman the son of Judge Lyman of N. Providence" asking for information on "the subject of the enclosed letter? What evidence is necessary? ... I have no personal acquaintance with him, but there is no question as to the facts stated in the enclosed letter. I would not trouble you with this but I am unwilling to leave the House during session." Judge Lyman is no doubt Daniel Lyman (1756-1830) of Lymanville Manufacturing Company in North Providence. He had several sons to whom Eddy may be referring. Item #55308
