Macfarlane (1834-1907) "mining engineer, geologist, chemist, and civil servant" (DCB), was a significant figure in the history of mining and economic geology in Canada. He discovered the first major silver deposit in Canada, and was active as a mining engineer and consultant in Canada, the United States, and South America.
