[Prospectus for an American translation of Gauss's important book on planetary motions.]

Cambridge, [Mass.]: Aug. 16, 1854. Broadside (approx. 9¾' x 7¾"), in the form of a letter: "Sir, I have completed a translation of Gauss's Theoria Motus Corporum Coelestium, etc. which I propose to publish, adding to it some notes and an appendix. The translation will be published under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution, and partly by subscription ... I am therefore desirous of obtaining names of the mathematicians and astronomers of the country, and also for the orders for the libraries of colleges ... The price will be four dollars..." Previous folds, else fine. Charles Henry Davis (1807-1877) had a long and distinguished career, working for the Coast Survey, researching tides and currents, and commanding the Western Gunboat Flotilla during the victorious Battle of Memphis in the Civil War.
