A collection of contributions to Putnam's Magazine. Married to the eldest daughter of William Cullen Bryant, Godwin in the 1850s became an ardent abolitionist. Several of his essays here assume a parting of the ways between the north and south: "The Great Question," "Northern or Southern, Which?" and "Kansas Must be Free." Item #56008
