A memoir of Harriet Ware, first superintendent of the children's home, in the city of Providence

First edition, 12mo, pp. v, [3], 151, [1]; original brown blindstamped cloth, gilt lettering on spine; engraved frontispiece of Harriet Ware; cloth at spine extremities perished, and cloth cracked; otherwise good and sound. Ware (1799-1847) was called to teach at India Point, a tough section of Providence, in 1834. The following year, with the assisstance of Wayland, President of Brown University, she established the Providence Children's Friend Society, the oldest child welfare organization in Rhode Island. The text here consists mostly of extracts from Ware's correspondence tied together by Wayland's commentary. Not in Bartlett or Sabin. Item #56024
