New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1882. 12mo, pp. [4], [2], 374, [2], [6] ads; original orange printed wrappers, faded, bottom third of spine perished, the whole slightly stained, but the binding is sound; good. Ownership signature at the top of the front wrapper of Harold M. Sewall. This is likely the Maine diplomat and politician (1860-1924). The earliest wrappered American edition. Interestingly, the English edition, in cloth and wraps, also appeared in 1882. This edition includes press notices, both American and English, the latter from after the appearance of Democracy in London. See BAL 11. Item #56180
