One page autograph letter signed to James Rees

Philadelphia: December 22, 1874. 8vo, on "The Press" stationery, and signed "J. W. Forney." In it he makes reference to a funeral which they both had just attended, and apologizes for not returning a borrowed book sooner. The funeral was likely that of Edwin Forrest, the Shakespearean actor who passed away December 12th and was the subject of a biography by Rees. Forney (1817-1881) was a journalist and politician, having served as clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives, and Secretary of the U.S. Senate. Item #56574
