Promissory note for the purchase of a slave

Bristol: June 29, 1747. Slip of paper (approx. 4" x 5½"); previous folds, toned, else very good. "I promise to pay Job Lewis Esq. Fifty-five Pounds old tend. or Order for a Negro Man named Fortune on demand." [Signed:] "Bennet Munro." On the back is a receipt signed by Thomas Palmer acknowledging, on Lewis's behalf, that Munro has paid the 55 pounds. Munro (1708-1775) was a ship captain who was born and died in Bristol, R.I. He was the second largest slave holder in Bristol. Item #56625
