Notary public ledger for Jeffersonville, Indiana 1863-1871
Jeffersonville, IN: 1863. Manuscript ledger, 10.5" x 6", pp. [205]; removed from binding, spine perished, flyleaf loose and one ledger leaf loose, assorted contract drafts laid and tipped in. The first handful of pages are simply names and values, but entries quickly become more detailed, recording the nature of each transaction and parties involved, including proof of death, affidavits, payments and loans, purchases of land, rents and mortgages, etc., representing the major financial and legal activity of the city over a course of eight years. A large portion of the entries are stamped and dated with the name of John D. Shryer, who served as notary public during this period, but had earlier been Mayor of Jeffersonville, the fifth since the city's founding. Item #56936
