Three-page manuscript letter on Mason City in the Civil War

Mason City [IA]: 1862. Bifolium letter, 7.5" x 4.5", text on three pages, keeping a friend up to date on the conditions of the city. Prior folds, near fine. Phelps notes that a large number of refugees have arrived from Kanawha, the whites in order to avoid conscription into the rebel army, and the blacks escaping slavery. "They had about 20 negroes they sent all them to Ohio that could go to keep them from being confiscated it will be too bad if they do take their property." Phelps also describes the local troop movement, and rumor of a new general coming with 22 thousand men. Item #56959
