Galvanism refers to the practice of stimulating organic tissue with electrical currents. Inscribed at the top of the front wrapper to Jean Baptiste Julien d'Omalius d'Halloy (1783-1875), a Belgian geologist who conducted detailed surveys of France and Italy.
