One-page bond of office for the position of Assistant Commissary of Issues in the American Army

Hartford: September 1, 1777. Folio (approx. 13½" x 8¼"); lightly toned; some dampstaining, previous folds; all else very good. With a 19th century inventory sticker in the upper left corner. "I John Hall of Hartford in the county of Hartford in Connecticut am holden and stand bound unto the Honourable John Hancock Esq. President of the Continental Congress or his Successor in Office in the sum of Five Thousand Dollars ... I the said John Hall do bind Myself, Heirs, Executors and Administrators firmly by these Presents... "The Condition of this Obligation is such that if the above bounden John Hall shall well and truly execute the Office and Trust of an Assistant Commissary of Issues in the American Army, according to the Resolutions of Congress regulating that Department, then this present Obligation to be void and of none Effect, but in Default thereof shall stand, remain and abide in full force, strength, power and virtue..." Signed by John Hall in the presence of Sam Gray Jr. and Tho[mas] Pratt. John Hancock was the first President of the Continental Congress from 1776-1777. Item #57281
