Prize inscription on front free endpaper: "Presented to Benj. Hitchcock of Ward School No. 3 as a token of appreciation for his Industry Punctuality & Good Behavior during the last quarter. N. S. Aug. 3rd 1868." Timothy Shay Arthur was a prolific author and publisher (Wright attributing over 75 titles to his credit), best known for his didactic, moralistic and simple stories. He was closely associated with the Temperance movement, having written the influential Ten Nights in a Bar-room and What I Saw There, which was adapted into a popular play.
