Phrenology, in connexion with the study of physiognomy. Part I. Characters [all published]

London: Treuttel, Wurtz, and Richter, 1826. First edition in English, large 8vo, pp. [9], 2-191, [1]; uncut; 34 lithograph plates showing 82 portraits including Descartes, Nero, Melancthon, several popes, and many others; green cloth-backed paper-covered boards; front hinge starting, covers rubbed, paper spine label perished, otherwise very good. Johann Gaspar Spurzheim (1776-1832) was a German physician who expanded upon Franz Joseph Gall's system of phrenology. The text largely consists of Spurzheim analyzing the features of prominent historical figures and discussing what their physical features communicate about their character. Spurzheim also provides biographies, using their accomplishments or failures to support his assessments. Not in Corns & Sparke. Nonetheless, Part I is all that was published. Item #57648
