With an inscription at the top of the title page: "Hon. President Quincy, with respects of F. P." next to which in pencil: "The gift of ... Recd. Feb. 20, 1841." Also, at the top of the front wrapper: "Gift of Prest. Quincy, recd. 20 Feb. 1841." Quincy, of course, Josiah Quincy, president of Harvard. Francis Parkman (1788-1852) is not to be confused with Francis Parkman (1823-1893), author of The Oregon Trail. The former was the father of the latter. American Imprints 40-5244; Sabin 58800.
