Christmas at the Tavern Club, 1920 [drop title]

[Boston: The Tavern Club], 1920. Bifolium keepsake, 6.5" x 4", print of a bear on front page, four stanza poem by John Jay Chapman inside; light soiling, near fine. The Tavern Club was a less formal gentlemen's club established in Boston, with a focus on amateur performances of all the various arts and other creative endeavors. It produced Christmas and Halloween cards annually, with material provided by its members. John Jay Chapman was a prolific essayist, speaker, and social reformer. "His work is marked by originality and felicity of expression, and the opinion of many critics has placed him in the front rank of the American essayists of his day" (Wikipedia). In addition to his essays, he also wrote fiction, plays, and poetry. Chapman was much respected by his contemporaries, but never widely read, and most of his work has long been out of print.
