Philadelphia: Presley Blakiston, 1012 Walnut Street, 1880. Thick 8vo, pp. xxii, [2], 550, [6] opinions of the press of the 1877 edition and of the author's other works; frontispiece portrait of Albert Napper, founder of Cottage Hospitals (in the pagination), numerous illustrations, plans, engravings (some folding, some full-page), and including statistical forms and tables, original blue cloth stamped in gilt on upper cover and spine; title page a little foxed, and with the small and somewhat faint previous owner name-stamp of collector George R. Brush M.D., U.S. Navy, in service as a surgeon & medical inspector, from 1861-1894; a near fine, sound copy. First published in London in 1877, this is the extensively revised, best, and much enlarged edition detailing the history of the Cottage Hospital movement, with details on its finance, various constructions, sanitary arrangements, medical and nursing departments, management, equipment, convalescent cottages, and detailed accounts of particular cottage hospitals with plans and elevations. Also, a discussion of the construction and regulation of mortuaries, and a section on American cottage hospitals, among other topics. Sir Henry Charles Burdett (1847-1920) was a British philanthropist and hospital reformer who "distrusted state intervention in the hospital world because he believed it would substitute remote bureaucratic control for local initiative and individual responsibility. Arguably, he did more to defend and to expand voluntary hospital provision than anyone who had ever lived..." (ODNB). Item #57912
