A private collection which was given to the city of Moscow in 1892 and placed in a public gallery for the first time in 1902. Massive renovations began in 1985; the New Tretyakov Gallery (as it is now called) presents the most complete permanent exhibition of the art of the 20th century in all its diversity - avant-garde, socialistic realism and art of the "austere style" and "underground" and some new art trends.
