Nikko is the site of the mausoleum of the Tokugawa family, de facto rulers of Japan from 1600-1868. The Toshogu Shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, and together with the other shrines and temples at the Nikko complex is one of the most popular tourist destinations within Japan.
