Early ownership signature of "AJ Brown." A popular and durable text. A tenth edition was reached by 1871. Gillespie (1816-68) was the first professor of civil engineering at Union College. To quote the DAB this work “was quickly recognized as useful in its field and held its place until long after his death.” Hindle, in his Technology in early America (p. 59) notes it as “an excellent treatise on road construction.” Kress C.7094.
