Alexandria: printed by Cottom & Stewart, booksellers and stationers, Royal-Street, 1801. 2 volumes, 12mo, pp. [5], 6-256; [3], 4-248; contemporary full sheep, red leather labels on spines, blue sprinkled edges; rubbed and worn, upper joint on volume II neatly repaired, top of spine on volume II chipped; otherwise, good and sound. Ownership signature of Geo. C. Quackenbos on both title pages, engraved bookplate of Mrs. Bradish. Interestingly, blue sprinkles enter into the margin of p. 256 in the first volume showing directional positioning of the sprinkler. This is one of at least three known Alexandria imprints for this title, priority not determined, and none distinguished in American Imprints. First published in London in 3 volumes in 1799, this is the first American edition. The book is dedicated on the title page to the Bluestocking Elizabeth Carter. Her earlier novel A Gossip's Story was a source for Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. American Imprints 1643; NCBEL III, 772 not noting this American edition. Item #58315
