Cairo: Government Press, 1920. 2 volumes, folio, pp. ix, [7], 262; volume II is a portfolio containing 16 loose folding plates, plans, surveys and maps (some in color); folding color frontispiece map in volume I, 7 tables (6 folding), numerous tables and graphs in the text; original printed green paper-covered boards, green cloth shelfbacks which are cracked, chipped, and on the second volume, loose; but the text and all the illustrative material are fine throughout. Murdoch (1866-1957) a civil engineer, assistant engineer on the first Aswan Dam project, director-general of irrigation for the Egyptian Government, subsequently Under Secretary of State for Public Works, and finally adviser to Egypt's Minister of Public Works, served in Egypt for 23 years. He was responsible for the planning and completion of overall drainage schemes for lower Egypt which finally dealt with about 3,000,000 acres. He also designed the Sennar Dam on the Blue Nile, and put into operation the first stages of the Gezira irrigation schemes for the conversion of virgin land in the Sudan for cotton growing. His detailed report, Nile Control, published in 1920, was an early valuable guide to the effective water resource management of the Nile. Item #58321
