First edition, 8vo, pp. [iii]-xvii, [3], 22-544; wood-engraved illustrations throughout; extra-illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 7 tipped in plates (mostly lithographs) regarding Yucatan archeological sites and findings; title page with the small, somewhat faint ownership stamp of previous owner George R. Brush, M.D. U.S. Navy, surgeon & medical inspector, 1861-1894 and often on-station in Caribbean and Central American locales; original olive-green pebble-grain cloth, gilt spine titles; light wear to extremities, some foxing and spotting to the extra plates; very good and sound. For example, the published frontispiece of Court and Tower of the Place, Palenque has tipped-in opposite it the plate 'Yucatan. Facade De La Grande Pyramide,' a steel engraving by Lemaître, circa 1843. There are (7) additional Lemaitre archeological site plates including two on one page showing the Palace at Palenque and its floor-plan. Laid-in is an illustration of the Chac Mol statue and at back endpaper is tipped on another, "Excavating the Statue." Item #58324
