First edition, 16mo, pp. 61, [3]; original blind-stamped brown cloth; gilt lettering on upper cover; a.e.g.; overlay frontispiece printed in blue; spine darkened and chipped; front joint cracked; title page starting; otherwise good. The frontispiece is a blue chromolithographic plate of a woman with artificial teeth, her face "restored to its original and youthful appearance by the aid of Artificial Teeth as supplied by Mr. Howard." There is an overlay print depicting the same woman with no teeth, "their loss occasioning that close approximation of the nose & chin so Characteristic of Old Age." A work of advertising for Thomas Howard, dentist to the archbishop of Canterbury. Howard discusses his specialized technique for installing false teeth, advises on healthy dental practices, and provides information on various diseases and conditions that may afflict the teeth.
