First edition, large 8vo, pp. ix, [3], 516; 6 chromolithograph plates (including frontispiece) 15 color charts, and 91 text engravings (43 of which are full-page); contemporary if not original half brown morocco over marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers; spine in six compartments with gilt-lettered direct in 2; upper joint reattached and rubbed, some residue and small closed tear on upper endpaper, text clean and sound, all else very good. Simonin (1830-1886), a mine engineer and professor of geology, explored mines around the world, including in America. This work includes many chapters devoted to the origin and role of minerals, marbles, precious stones, and diamonds. This volume covers his work in France, Cuba, Colorado, Arkansas, Morel-Faito, Italy, and Elba. Item #58478
